A good plumber is happy to answer all of these. If a company dodges them, that tells you something too.
Before they come
- Is there a license number? Ask for it. In Arizona you can check a contractor's license on the Arizona Registrar of Contractors site (roc.az.gov).
- Are they bonded and insured? Ask them to say it plainly.
- Does a person answer the phone? You should be able to reach them when something goes wrong, not only before the sale.
- Who is actually coming? Ask the name of the person who will be at your door.
- Do they confirm the visit? A check-in text or call before arrival means they respect your time.
At the visit
- Do they explain the problem in plain English before they start work?
- Do you get the cost before work begins? No surprises after.
- Do they have the parts, or will you wait for a second visit?
- Will they show you the old part or explain what failed?
Red flags
- Pressure to decide on the spot.
- No license number, or one you can't verify.
- A vague price that changes once work starts.
- Asking for the full payment up front.
- No one answers when you call back.
